Our CPU and SoC capabilities at ByteSnap Design cover a vast array of devices.

We have expertise with product and software development around a wide range of microcontrollers – from high performance application processors down to tiny low-cost 8 bit devices.

At ByteSnap Design, our consultants use a wide variety of microcontrollers and microprocessors to create products that meet the right balance of cost, power consumption and performance.

Choosing the right micro for the job can be a complex task as the designer needs to take account of the cost, power consumption and performance as well as development tools, operating system availability and product longevity.

A large family of application processors capable of running operating systems e.g.
Yocto Linux or Android.  Good longevity (long term availability)
giving confidence in using them as the basis for embedded products.
NXP have taken a strong lead in embedded application processors
and as such are our first port of call when choosing an application processor.

ARM Cortex M
e.g. NXP Kinetis,
Low cost, low power 32 bit processor core.
Wide resource base, multiple vendors. Huge span of capabilities from tiny,
very low cost parts through to microcontrollers with application
processor-level performance.
PIC family Low cost, wide choice of peripherals.
AVR family Low cost, similar to PIC. Basis of the Ardunio modules beloved by hobbyists.
8051 Old but still widely-used core within niche devices e.g. programmable logic or
a metering chip.
Xilinx PicoBlaze
and MicroBlaze,
Microcontrollers embedded within an FPGA, saving chip count and maximising


Within each family of microcontrollers there are a wide variety of peripheral choices as well as memory size and type variants.

With our expertise we can guide you through this daunting and long-winded task to ensure you always choose the best part.

We are fluent in programming microcontrollers in C, C++ and assembler. We choose the language based on a trade-off between performance and code size.

As compilers improve, so the use of C and C++ has become more prevalent. However, for some small or fast applications assembler can still be the best choice.

Ultimately, we have the experience to use the language most suited to the task.
